イギリスの小さな町ノーフォークにて創業したオーガニックブランド Austin Austin。
厳格にオーガニックを追及した製品と、従来のオーガニック製品の佇まいとは一線を画すモダンなビジュアル。革新的な存在感でその名を広めた Austin Austin は、70年代にイギリスで初めて自然食品専門のお店をオープンしたリチャードと、インテリアデザインや広告業界でキャリアを積んだアートに造詣の深いベッシーという、父娘でありながら異なる視座を持った2人の協働によって生まれました。
父娘という関係性や、それぞれのパーソナリティが作用し合うことでブランドの信念を深めてきた Austin Austin。ものづくりへのこだわりや、ブランドが現在の個性に至った経緯を、リチャードとベッシーの2人にインタビューしました。
第1回は、父 リチャード。学生時代からの興味深いキャリアなどをお伺いしています。
1. Your background and career
バックボーンとキャリアについて
−−− リチャードのメインのビジネスは、70年代にスタートしたイギリスで初めての自然食品専門店 “Rainbow Wholefoods” と、80年代から続いているナチュラルな歯磨き Kingfisher、共に自然素材のプロダクトを扱っていらっしゃいます。今では注目が集まっている分野ですが、当時これらのビジネスを手がけることになった経緯を教えていただけますか。
また歴史ある Norwich の街を拠点としていることについてもお聞かせください。
リチャード： 私は学生時代にロンドンで法律を学び、弁護士になるための勉強をしていましたが、その種の職業特有の堅苦しさに圧迫感を感じていて、将来的に自分がそのキャリアにおさまる気持ちにはなれませんでした。
そこでハリウッドに移って少しの間暮らしてみたのですがあまり肌に合わず、メキシコまでヒッチハイクなどもしました。そんな中で、ロンドンで堅苦しく学術的な法律を学んだ後だったので、次はもう一度大学に入って哲学を学んでみることに決めたのです。
大学の学期が始まる少し前にメキシコからイギリスへ戻り、初めてノーフォークのノリッジへ行きました。私はその街や周りの田園あふれる田舎がとても気に入って、それ以来ずっとノーフォークに住むようになりました。第二学士号を取得し終える頃にはもう7年間も教育課程にいたので、これからは「代替社会（alternative society）」の業界で働こうと決めて、自然食品の店を始めることにしました。この仕事を選んだことは私の人生において最高の選択の一つですが、始めた頃はそこまで大した動機ではなかったのです。
−−− Richard, talking about your career, you founded Rainbow Wholefoods in 1976, which is considered one of UK’s oldest and most established natural and organic food stores and also founded Kingfisher which is the UK’s leading natural Toothpaste since 80’s.
Like this you has been working with Organics since the 70’s until now.
Nowadays, as it seems people are getting more concerned about their health so that have interest in the field of organic and natural produce, please tell us about your story that you had started working with Organics in 70’s.
And why have you been based in the city of Norwich, England since then?
Richard： I studied law in London and trained to become a lawyer but felt stifled by the conformity of that profession and didn’t feel ready to settle into that career. I went to live in Hollywood for a while but didn’t like that too much either so I hitchhiked to Mexico and decided that after the rigours of academic Law I would take a second degree in Philosophy. I flew in just before term started and went, for the first time, to Norwich. I loved the city and the countryside which surrounds it and have lived in Norfolk ever since. At the end of my second degree I had done seven years of further education and decided that I wanted to work in ‘the alternative society’ so I opened a wholefood shop. One of the best decisions of my life but taken for mostly the wrong reasons.

−−− Austin Austin は COSMOS ORGANIC 認証の取得他、パッケージにもリサイクル素材を採用するなど細部にまでこだわっていらっしゃいますが、クオリティの高さの割には手に届きやすい価格設定だと思います。これを実現できたのはあなたの持つ知識と経験があったからこそでしょうか。
リチャード： この仕事を始めた頃にはほとんどこの業界に知り合いはいませんでしたが、長い年月と経験を経て、今ではたくさんのオーガニック農家やトレーダー、生産者の方々と知り合うことができました。
繊細な手入れを必要とする自然農法は、まぎれもなくオーガニック製品やパーソナルケア用品などを使うすべての人々にとって大いに役立っていると自負しています。
−−− ものづくりとビジネスにおいて、親子ならではの良さはありますか？
リチャード： ベッシーと私は意見が合わないことももちろんありますが、相手の強みがどんなところにあるのかなど、長い年月をかけてよく理解し合っているので、互いの意見に耳を傾け譲り合うことができます。こういった関係性が私たちを非常に強いチームにしていると思います。
娘と父親として、私たちは常にとても近くにいながら、それぞれの仕事を楽しんできました。ビジネスパートナーとしての関係性はちょっと違って、Austin Austin は主にベッシーのビジネスであって、私は Austin Austin の中では二番手の立ち位置にいるつもりです。互いの尊敬や愛情によって私たちのビジネスはうまくまわっていると思っています。
−−− All of Austin Austin products are certified Organic by the Soil Association and COSMOS with all packaging being 100% recycled, environmentally friendly. We can see your attention to details to create the best possible product. Considering your creation of natural ingredients and high performance, the price range of your product seems to be affordable. Do you think this is because of your experience and know-how through your long career in the organic industry?
Richard： I knew very little when I started working but over the many years since then I have been able to meet many Organic farmers, traders and manufacturers. There is no doubt in my mind that this method of agriculture, and the sensitive care that it requires, are of great benefit to all who use Organic products either for food or personal care.
−−− As a father-daughter founded brand, how do you balance your work relationship and personal relationship? Do you feel any advantage for creation and business?
Richard： There are times that Bessie and I disagree but we have learned, over the many years that we have known each other, where our respective strengths are and we are able to defer in one way or the other. It makes for a very strong team. As daughter and father we have always been close and really enjoyed each others’ company. The business partner relationship is balanced differently because the business is primarily Bessie’s and I see myself as the second Austin in Austin Austin. But our respect and affection for each other makes everything work.
