リチャード・オースティンとベッシー・オースティンの父娘がイギリスの小さな町ノーフォークにて創業したオーガニックブランド Austin Austin。
潔くドローイングを配したパッケージデザインがより人を惹きつけるインパクトとなっている Austin Austin ですが、アーティストの起用はベッシーの強い要望により実現したものだと言います。
インタビューの締めくくりとなる第4回では、引き続き 娘 ベッシーを相手に、アーティストと企画を共にする Austin Austin の試みや、飾らない日常のことなどをお伺いしました。
3. Package design
パッケージデザインについて
−−− あなたのアイデアである、売り文句を前面に出さないシンプルなパッケージについて、当初お父さまのリチャードと意見が割れたそうですね。
Christian Newby （クリスチャン・ニュービー） のアートワークがとても素敵ですが、商品企画の段階から念頭にあったアイデアなのでしょうか。
今後、他のアーティストとのコラボレーションも予定していますか？
ベッシー： デザインについてはパッケージ専門のイラストレーターなどではなく、アーティストと仕事をしたいと常々思っています。ファーストコレクションのデザインを依頼したクリスチャンの、顔や体のシンプルな描写だけで多くの雰囲気を伝える手法もとても気に入っています。
私たちの企画では、コレクション毎にそれぞれ違ったアーティストと取り組みたいと考えています。
アーティストに Austin Austin の「ブランドスタイル」みたいなものを押し付けるのではなく、むしろ独自のクリエイティブなアプローチを私たちの製品に乗せて活かしてほしいと思っています。
−−− We’ve heard that there are pros and cons regarding adopting the simple packaging by your proposal with not noticing too much description of appealing to organics copy.
On the packaging of Austin Austin, the design by the artist Christian Newby is so impressive, how did your collaboration with artist Christian Newby come about?
What was the creative inspiration behind the illustrative design used on your packaging?
Is it your original idea that you will work with artists not packaging designers from the stage of product planning?
In the near future, are you planning to collaborate with other artists?
Bessie： It was always our intention to work with artists rather than packaging illustrators and we loved the way that Christian communicated so much character in his depiction of faces and bodies. Our plan is to work with a different artist for each collection that we bring out. We would not say that we have a ‘brand style’ with the artists we work with and we will allow each to bring their own creative approach to our products.
4. What you like
好きなこと、大切にしていること
−−− 休日の過ごし方や、愛用している日用品など、好きなこと、大切にしていることを教えてください。
ベッシー： 最近娘を出産して、Coralie という名前で今8ヶ月になります。そんなわけで今は私の生活は娘一色で、自分の自由な時間などもはやないに等しい感じです。出産前は絵を描いたり、読書をしたり、ガーデニングや散歩も大好きでした。あと一度娘を連れていきましたが山も好きですし、ノーフォークのあちこちにある田園を散歩するのも大好きです。
これを書いている今は、Covid-19のせいでロンドンの自宅にこもりっきりになっています。世界中の多くの人々にとって困難な時であり、同時にこの状況が家族や友人の存在といった大切なものごとを深く見つめるきっかけとなっています。
−−− What do you like to do in your spare time?
Please tell us about your holiday plan and your favorite items in your daily life, and what the most important thing to you is.
Bessie： I recently had a daughter, Coralie, who is 8 months old now. She fills my days so I no longer have much spare time. I used to enjoy painting, reading, gardening and walking. I also love the mountains (where we have taken Coralie once) and the fields (plenty of those in Norfolk).
We are home-bound in London as I write this due to Covid-19. These are difficult times for so many people and the situation helps bring into focus the important things – family and friends.
5. The current state of “Organic”
オーガニックの現在について
−−− 自然食品や自然素材のプロダクトに親しんで育ったとのことですが、それらを取り巻く状況に変化を感じますか？
ベッシー： 自然素材、オーガニックの動きはもはやまぎれもなく世界中に広く知れわたるものになりました。私たちが何かを購入する時に環境への影響を1人1人が考え始め、確かなオーガニック製品をあえて意識して注意しながら選択するようになってきたのは明らかで、こういった意識が今まで以上に大切な世の中になってきているように思います。
−−− You grew up eating Organic food and using natural products, do you feel people’s perception of organic and natural produce is different from what it was before?
Bessie： Natural and Organic has undoubtedly grown in popularity. Perhaps that as we begin to see the environmental impact that our buying decisions have, it has become clear that making conscious and careful choices, like opting for certified Organic products, is more important than ever.
